Ascertain the Worlds Very Best Safaris with Kaingo this Spring

September 16th, 2008

The thought of a safari in Africa will probably stir up the emotions of excitement and the location of Africa. Safaris have been well established in Africa for decades and have become famous with the English holiday tourists due to the wonderful weather and the spectacular wildlife that might well be explored.

The greatest time to scout out Africa for a fascinating walking safari is around November as the weather is astonishing. The number of Scottish tourists who travel over to Africa for a safari has significantly increased in the last 9 years due to the strong pound and also due to the increased attention of South Africa.

The wildlife that you may behold is massive, you might often see cheetahs and zebras all up close. Africa is spot on for those who desire to come and scout out the wildlife and also wish for a romantic vacation. The South African safaris are not too strenuous that you cannot go back to your lovely hotel in the evening for a romantic evening. That is why safaris in Zambia can often be perfect for a honeymoon. South Africa has some of the best privately owned hotels and walking safaris in the world and should be experienced by you at least once. Try a safari in Zambia with Kaingo Safaris.

What Climate Should Be Expected in Cyprus?

August 22nd, 2008

Northern Cyprus has a very similar climate to many European countries in the same area. It is Mediterranean climate, with plenty of long summers with high temperatures and little rainfall. The summers can last from as early as the month of May, right through to late October, in some years. The spring and autumn of Northern Cyprus are shorter than those in the English seasons, and the winter months are decidedly milder. The Northern Cypriot summer is summarised by light breezes and wonderfully high temperatures. The hottest are July and August, which can rise as high as 40 degrees, and even the coldest months can still be up to 15 or 20 degrees centigrade. The concentration of solar energy during summer is 417.3 cal/cm.sq. When it peaks during July the average is 622.2 cal, in centimetres squared, in December, when the average sunlight levels are beginning to diminish, is is still as high as 214.5 cal, in centimetres squared. The mountainous parts of Northern Cyprus are more cold and wet than than other parts of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus. They see rainfall of as much as 1000mm, which is the highest for the island. Rainfalls in these areas reaches variable levels of i450 millimetres to 1,100 millimetres, depending on sections of the island. There are plains areas along the Northern coast, with rainfall estimates at 400 to 450 millimeters of rainfall every year. The least rainfall occurs in the Mesaoria, with 300 millimeters a year.Rainfall on the island, and in Northern Cyprus in particular, has decreased steadily over the last 30 years. Some rain occurs in winter, but it is still generally mild. The climate in Northern Cyprus is certainly perfect for most holidays, then, and all year round. Indeed in the summer season the island enjoys as much as 12 hours of sunshine per day, and the level of humidity is low, making the sun pleasant and exhilarating. 60% of all the rain from the island falls between December and February; the rest of the year - a majority figure - is hot and dry. The emergence of frost and snow in Northern Cyprus are is very unlikely indeed, and North Cyprus winds blow at an average wind thrust of 2.8m per second, though wind across the year is fairly low. Northern Cyprus’ subtle combination of passionately hot temperatures, low humidity, and low rainfall make it one of the most desirable climates in Europe, and this equally makes it one of the best places for a summer, winter, autumn or spring holiday

European climber Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mount Everest and Mont Blanc

August 7th, 2008

Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma or Mount Everest. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. More than 3026 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on the Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Mt Everest is shared by two countries. The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Everest. This year climber Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mount Everest after he reached the summit of earlier this season.

“Mt Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Nevertheless, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Chomolungma could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

Nepalese climber, 77, oldest person to conquer the summit of Chomolungma or Mount Everest His first found him within 162 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. One year later, Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Everest to finish what he had started.

Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Sherchan just 21 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Travel Games

June 20th, 2008

One of my favorite travel games is chess. Okay, it’s just one of my favorite games, and I have three-ounce set with a cloth board, so I can take it anywhere. The last time I used it was in the town center of a small pueblo in the Andes Mountains. The games below are primarily car travel games, but can be adapted to other forms of travel too. Have fun!

Educational Travel Games

Some games get you thinking, learning something, or at least showing off what you know. Here’s one for the family. Have the driver, or another designated host, asks questions like “What temperature does water boil at?” or “What’s the Capital of Columbia?” or “With sales tax of 7.6%, what’s the total cost of a $23 sweater?” For the kids to love this one, you may have to pay twenty-five cents for each right answer.

Another car travel game starts with someone looking out the window and randomly selecting an object. Players then try to imagine a creative way to make money with it. Old barns become places to advertise, cows are rented out for kids parties, and an house that is being moved becomes a traveling discotheque.

“Red Car” Travel Games

Guess how many red cars will pass in the next ten miles or ten minutes. It can also be blue cars, trucks, or whatever everyone agrees to. It’s considered bad form for the driver to slow down, letting more cars pass, so his guess will be the closest.

One classic travel game involves the alphabet. Try to spot something starting with an “a”, and be the first to call it out (”apple tree!”). Since the Qs and Xes are difficult, they can be skipped. The player with the most “firsts,” is the winner.

Using the radio, you can have a game in which everyone tries to be the first to call out the name of the artist when a song starts. Then change the station, so you don’t have to wait through a whole song to continue the contest. In one car radio game, each player chooses a word. The player whose word is spoken (or sung) first on the radio is the winner.

Here is one you can play anywhere. Someone starts a story with a sentence or two, then each person in turn adds a line to the story. It can get personal, but this usually creates a story that has everyone laughing.

Try one of these on your next trip, especially if you have a car full of kids. They are easy, and unlike my chess game, you don’t need anything but a few people to play these travel games.

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the U.S. and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. For travel stories, tips and a free e-book, visit: www.EverythingAboutTravel.com

Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday - The Great Divide!

June 3rd, 2008

What’s the difference between Mother’s day and Mothering Sunday? Well, Mothering Sunday originated in the UK and is a Christian Festival, whilst Mother’s day in the States was originally started by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 as part of her peace campaigning and pioneering for woman’s rights.

In the USA, Mother’s day was popularised by Ana Jarvis who campaigned to have the day recognised following her own mother’s death. Her campaigning was so successful that in 1914, President Woodrow made Mother’s Day into a National Holiday to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Mothering Sunday in the UK is a Christian festival. Each year it always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent and by tradition it was a day when children gave presents, flowers and cards to their mothers. Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK since at least the 16th century.

Mothering Sunday was also known as Mid-Lent Sunday or Refreshment, because in the old days Sunday when boys were apprenticed from about ten years old and many girls went into service from about the same age, they were allowed a day off to go home and share a meal with their family. Mothering Sunday falls in the middle of Lent and so the fasting rules were relaxed (some say in honour of the Feeding of the Five Thousand - a story from the Bible). Besides having a good meal, children also went home to the ‘Mother’ church.

Another name for Mothering Sunday is Simnel Sunday. That comes from the tradition of making a special cake called a Simnel Cake. There are plenty of Simnel Cake recipes but very few that explain why it has 11 marzipan balls decorating the top of the cake. They are supposed to represent 11 apostles (Judas, who betrayed Christ, is already removed).

Although Mothering Sunday in the UK is regarded as the equivalent of Mother’s day in the USA, it falls on a different day every year depending on when Lent starts. And, in the UK people still give cards, flowers and gifts to their mothers, just as Mother’s Day is celebrated in the USA
