Party Decorations

November 6th, 2009

When you are hosting a party, start planning how you will decorate well in advance of your event. Waiting until a day or two before your party means you will have to rush, and might not be able to find all of the items that you need to create the look that you want.

You’ll want to accent your home or party location with party decorations that accent your party theme nicely. If you have a jungle party theme, it’s a nice touch to add large sized plants. Or, add safari hats as centerpieces, or paw prints throughout the house. If you have a beach themed party, add seashells or travel posters with nice looking seascapes. Set up tiki torches along your sidewalk. Play Beach Boys or other beach music. Pinatas can be great for almost any theme. Whatever you do, take the extra step and use your imagination.

When you are decorating, have some fun. Don’t limit yourself to balloons and streamers (although they are perfectly lovely.) Look for hanging decorations, like themed banners or cutouts. Consider centerpieces to add interest and dimension to your tables. There are so many possibilities out there, that every occasion you host really gives you an opportunity to be creative!

Calling Clock

June 4th, 2009

At any given point of action in a hand of poker, unless it has been prespecified by special sanction otherwise, there is no set amount of time determined for how long it should take a player to make an action on his hand at the casino online. In deciding what to do (whether it be raise, fold, or call) at each point in the action for a player, it is considered open reign for the player to take as much time as he needs, within reason, to make a decision.

If a poker online player is taking an unreasonable amount of time, however, as judged by one of his fellow players at the table or the dealer, a clock may be called on the player, at which point he has one minute to act or his hand is declared dead. Again, there is no set standard of how long is too long, and when a clock should be calledit is up to the whim of the players and the dealer. Often, though, it is considered bad etiquette to call a clock on a player, especially when he has good reason to be taking so much time deciding (i.e.: it is a large pot).

Usually the most time a clock might get called is in a tournament situation, where the blinds are increasing and other players are therein suffering by one player taking too long with one given decision.

Dam the Leaks – Ego Check

February 2nd, 2009

Playing poker entails risk, which is why those who play regularly for real money must have a minimum level of confidence in their game. Poker celebrities sometimes take that confidence a little too far and betray themselves as ego maniacs with their temper tantrums at the table. But letting your ego drive your game is a sure way to throw your chips away.

In poker, ego gets in the way of logical decision-making and can prompt a player to call a bet instead of folding because the player does not want to be seen as weak. If folding is analogous to surrender, an aggressive player will make the crying call even though the hand is beat just to avoid the appearance of surrender. The result is that chips are sacrificed to the ego. Give up the ego, and keep your chips!

Ego can force players to seek revenge. A player may put a bad beat on you, and that compels a series of unjustified bets to get even. Once again, emotion and ego are clouding judgment and that can only lead to a diminished chip stack.

Sometimes players just get in too deep in poker games they can’t beat, but are reluctant to move down to a lower level. What follows is a busted bankroll. Again, this is ego talking and not common sense self-appraisal.

Bragging about your abilities at the poker table might make you feel good, but you are giving free information to your opponents. Be guarded about your strategies and poker knowledge. Remember, boastful over-confident players can drive weak amateurs away, and those are the fish you want to keep in the game.

The Value of Staying Aggressive in Poker

December 3rd, 2008

In a recent poker tournament I played, I tried to play conservatively, and it cost me lots of chips.

We started this tournament with 30k in chips, and by playing tight and aggressive, I accumulated 37k over a few hours. I felt I had a certain luxury to open my game up a little and try and take down some bigger pots.

I called a 3x (about 2.5k) raise with Qd,10d with some dead money in the pot from blinds and antes. The flop came out 10, 3, 7 rainbow. In first position the preflop aggressor checked and I bet 2,000, about 1/3 of the pot, understandably a pretty small bet. The preflop aggressor raised it up to 6k, and I flat called. The turn paired the board with a 3 and my opponent bet 7k and I flat called, unconfident that my opponent might have had an overpair to the board from the beginning.

The river came out a K. My opponent checked, and I figured my 10 probably had showdown value, so I checked behind.

He showed A,K. Instead of continue betting on the flop, he check raised me. This made me think he might have had an overpair, and it slowed me down. His bet on the turn made little sense, so I called trying to see the river and make a sound poker decision. I should have tried a raise here, to get some information, but instead I decided to flat call and see if I could keep the pot from growing obnoxiously – and getting me into serious trouble. I didn’t really want to risk my whole stack with a pair of tens. The river came an overcard to my King and he checked, either trying to induce me to bet, or perhaps under the suspicion that I had aces. I checked behind and got the bad news that he had no pair no draw the entire way and was just trying to represent a premium pair. If at any time I tried a third raise, I would have taken down the pot. Instead I let him see a free card and he caught his 6-outter.

By trying to play small poker against an aggressive opponent, I actually played a larger pot than I was comfortable with and let him dictate the action. Unfortunately, I also let him catch on the river.
