Government Could Propose Bandwidth Stifling to Deal with Piracy

June 11th, 2009

Implementation of a “three offences and you’re out” law to check the problem of online piracy may eventually not be recommended by the government in the final Digital Britain report, which is going to come out on the 16th of this month. Instead, a new proposal involving the use of technology may now be proposed.

During a keynote speech at Music Week’s Make Online Music Pay conference, Culture secretary, Andy Burnham, spoke of “technical solutions” to prevent instances of copyright violations. The new report will recommend active controls on file sharing activity as part of the new approach. Broadband connections that are under the scanner for downloading copyrighted material will face the impact of these technical solutions as they could see a drastic reduction their speeds. The report will however, still recommend the idea that internet service providers issue letters to netizens who disobey copyright laws.

The comment from Burnham has so far been welcomed by most neutral observers. Mark Mulligan, vice president at Forrester Research is of the opinion that connection restrictions using technology can be implemented by the use of technology that is already being used by UK broadband providers for traffic management during the peak hours.

Mulligan pointed out that although both the ISPs and the music labels could be a little unhappy about this solution, they would acknowledge the fact that in the current circumstances this is probably the best strategy.

Medical Billing Is the "Other" Side of the Doctor’s Office

June 10th, 2009

There has been tremendous growth in the medical billing industry. Hospitals, clinics and private practice physicians do not have the time and often times lack the knowledge to properly bill for their services. In these cases, they use a medical billing company.

There are also problems with patients and companies who do not agree with the bills submitted for payment. Someone has to justify all the fees billed to these individuals and companies before payment will be made. Some patients are not able or willing to pay their debts to the clinic, and arrangements have to be made to collect those fees or at least partial fees. A medical billing service can do collections and get paid for the clinic faster. They can increase payments and reimbursements from individuals and insurance companies.

One of the largest determinants of a medical billing salary is definitely the number of years experience that you have. According to PayScale, those with less than one year of experience make a median salary of $12.20 per hour. In contrast, those with twenty years or more experience make a median salary of $16.06 per hour. As experience increases, so does your salary.

Another way that you can increase both your job opportunities and your salary is to become certified. Certified medical billing specialists have more job opportunities since medical billing companies know that they have at least a certain level of skills. Becoming certified also usually leads to higher salaries.

When a medical billing company works well for a clinic, it frees the doctors and staff to better treat patients and focus on practising medicine. It assists clinics decrease financial stress and keep operating costs down. A healthy bottom line pulls better doctors and staff to the clinic. That helps the clinic better serve the community in which it is located. A well run clinic with good debt recovery is more likely to survive over the long run, serving more patients and saving more lives as time goes on. Doctors are better at practising medicine than filling out forms and billing patients.

There are many Web sites dedicated to dating in this day and age, and many of them focus on specific groups of people. In recent years it seems there are more and more dating sites that are related to Christians, and many are even narrowed down to a specific religion. Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city that lies in the heart of the Bible belt, have taken advantage of the many free Christian dating services at their disposal. Tulsa residents can check out sites such as Christian Fishing, Match Made in Heaven, Christian Date and others in an effort to find that special person they’ve been looking for.

It’s even possible to create a local free Christian dating service by using church software. For those who aren’t aware, church software is a set of software applications that a church can use to manage its business. This includes accounting, payroll, setting up a Web site and tracking church members in a database. The database can track members’ marital status and other pertinent information such as phone number, address, number of children, occupation, etc. The software can then be used to help to match people that are members of a specific church for dating purposes (with their permission, of course). Local churches in Tulsa can also share member information and set up their own free Christian dating services, with or without the Internet.

Know the Lineup, Take Action and Meet New Singles

June 7th, 2009

First, I’m not that desperately eligible man, all too occupied by being missing the fun instead of living it up with friends. I’d bet people haven’t witnessed me blog on great dating and compatibility. Go figure.

Boredom is an avoidable foreign condition and intentionally neglected in my family history. But I do have a tender heart. Winter of 09 was an exception, I had to put the breaks on a special cohabitation and I felt a great deal for but essentially carried on to nowhere. Therefore you might go on record saying it has been years since I was dating. I’m missing the dating with great expectations I held years ago.

Single life has had its perks so far. This much is certain, I refuse to spend another weekend undisturbed, devowering Jack Bauer (from 24) episodes off the torrents. The biggest cause of this case of occasional dating boredom? We’re not in high school, and most ladies I meet at work are taken.

My former golf friend, Jim, who will never have dating boredom, told me he’s now shooting from the same blind as I am. He joinedGreat Expectations Dallas. Of course, I like getting to know quality gals with similar interests. Surprise, I got real about my dating life and signed up.

I told myself, ya can’t complain due to not having plans if you haven’t stepped off the bench. Like my senior year basketball coach Jason Smith told me as his idea of encouragement, “Fools lose before they try, son.”

So he was divorced 4 times. Even so, the old man was truly a wise sould in a good old fashioned way. He was good humored. This fun company offering matchmaking services in Dallas that I use could have done a number on the old man’s shiny bald head.

Last night at a Great Expectations happy hour I shared a great evening with a few accomplished and appealing singles that hold my eye. I actually had a good time with dozens of pretty enjoyable men and women. Went home with a promising exchange of numbers, and as a plus, I grew some political acquaintances for work. Very cool.

Put yourself in the play. Can’t win if you don’t try. Listen to me and believe in your own great expectations for great dating.

Cheers!

What will a website do for my business?

June 5th, 2009

There is no straight answer to this question. It surely depends on how you design your website and what you use it for. It can be anything from a simple window into your business, where you explain who you are and provide some contact information, to a complex system that becomes the backbone of your company and you cannot live without. But let’s go step by step and consider the possibilities. Many people just don’t imagine what they can get with a website. If you’re one of them, read on and you will find some answers. If you do know what a website can do for you…read on too! You may find new ideas.

The simpler version of a company website would be a bunch of institutional pages: a home page where you welcome your visitors and tell something about what you do. Then a page with the company history, and a page with contact information. If you sell products, you should include pages displaying them, with pictures if possible. This simple website will not require much maintenance, and will lead new customers to you, people who wouldn’t find you otherwise.

Moving one step forward, you can take your institutional site and add a newsletter service. So your customers, or other visitors to the site, sign up to receive a periodic email with information and news about your company. This allows you to know who is interested in your business, and offer them solutions and products. Plus, it helps generate loyalty. You will be making an effort to stay constantly in touch with potential customers.

Another step you can take is offer support to your customers in your website. It can be anything from email support, a tickets system or live chat. Whatever suits you and your business. You could also implement a forum where customers can post questions and answers, thus creating a community of users. If you sell products that have print manuals, you can generate PDF versions of these manuals and have them available on your website for download.

Then, a bigger step. You can move part of your business to the web. For example, you can enable a form where customers can submit quote requests. Or include a shopping cart to directly sell your products. These are only some of the possibilities, which in fact are endless. You must think about your company in particular, and what you think would help you. If you travel often, a password protected tool where you can enter and view information from any computer may be handy. If you have salesmen all around the city, or the country, a password protected tool where they enter the orders will help you collect the information.

Once you decide you will have a website for your company, you need:

-someone to create the website: a web designer, and also a web programmer if you plan to have something other than a small institutional site. Unlesss you can create it yourself using a site builder tool. Sometimes, the same person is designer and programmer.

-a domain: this is the internet address of your company. You need to register it. For example, www.your-company.com . Once you register a domain, it is yours until it expires, and you can renew the registration before expiry date. Domains can be registered for a year, or two, or ten, for example. You pay an annual fee which decreases if you register for several years at the same time.

-a hosting company: this is the place where you will host your website, where it will be kept so people can reach it. You need to choose the hosting plan that is adequate for your needs. There are lots of hosting companies, with all ranges of packages and prices. If you have a small website, you do not need a fancy hosting plan, just something simple will do. It is important that the hosting company is serious and reliable. If you’re creating a business website, don’t host it in a free server. It won’t do good to your image. You will find hosting plans are not expensive.

This has been a simple description of what a website can do for your business. If you still don’t have one, you should seriously consider it. If you already do have a website, think about what you have and maybe you will want to make some changes or improve it. It will always be a good tool to help you grow.
