The Rationale for Purchasing Public Liability Indemnity

October 30th, 2008

Public liability indemnity is advised because all firms are at threat to some degree. Even though nothing grim has yet occurred to your organisations belongings that’s no assurance that it will not one day in near the future. If someone is harmed or their assets stolen, it is your contractual obligation to suitably reimburse them. This cost can easily be awfully pricey, depending on the brand of the case.

Fortunately, you do have a number of ways to defend yourself against this probability. Choosing public liability insurance permits you to breathe noticeably easier. If a customer claim is very expensive, the insurance organisation will be available to supply you with a safety net. Its their responsibility to guarantee that you are safeguarded from any claims & legal fees brought against you. This leaves you available to concentrate on actually doing business, instead of worrying about what may possibly happen. The following are a number instances of times when public liability insurance could come in useful.

Managers of plumbing firms usually get the job finished quick and easy. Nonetheless, occasionally something may possibly go horribly wrong. For instance, should you unintentionally break a client’s gas pipes while on the job, damaging belongings for instance work stations and flooring, public liability indemnity will be there to pick up the invoice.

An additional example is that of a marketing organisation. If a customer were to break an ankle in your workplace, even if it is not your fault, you would be held answerable. Yet, with public liability insurance you wouldn’t have to pay the claim at all.

In a comparable instance, physical damage caused to a passerby by an employee on a building site is the duty of the firm’s proprietor. This kind of claim can easily become particularly pricey indeed, unless you get the correct insurance cover. Buy cheap Public Liability Insurance online with Insured Risks.

What to look for in a home - office graphics card

October 30th, 2008

Let’s talk about some specifics for the average home/office PC user. This PC is used for word processing, spreadsheets, viewing photos, and even watching a DVD movie or playing a 2D game. Most all of these functions are handled easily by today’s low-end graphics cards.

To accomplish these tasks, you can get by with a 32-64MB card, with a clock speed around 166MHz. You can find a good card with these specs for $40. Most of them will have only a VGA connector, but you can find some with DVI and even S-Video for more like $100.

Prevent eye fatigue If you are looking at spreadsheets and documents for hours on end, the best thing you can do is get a card that has a high refresh rate, at the resolution you work at. A minimum is 75MHz. The higher the resolution, the more memory is used on the card and the harder it is to refresh. If this rate drops below 75MHz, your eyes will be fatigued from the flicker of the monitor. Find out what your monitor can support at the resolution you use, then get a card that can pump it out that fast.

Don’t get features you don’t need If you just play on the Internet, or balance your checkbook on the computer, you don’t need all those available connectors on the back of your video card. Don’t spend a lot of extra money on a card that has features you’ll never use. If you’re just playing solitaire, it’s not likely you’ll notice the difference in a $50 card and a $500 card. Another good thing to check is the software that comes with the card. Most come bundled with nice utilities to change resolution and even add some effects to the way XP looks. A lot of them also come with a game or two, which are usually a good indication of what the card can handle.

Easy Web Design Tips

October 29th, 2008

Pick an easy layout; easy to design and easy to maintain. I have wasted many hours trying to design a site that was easily three steps above my skill level. This was a complete waste of time and I promised myself that I won’t make the same mistake again. If you are a beginner, find a good web hosting company, get your domain name, pick a decent template and get started. You’re not a designer so don’t spend all of your time on web design.

White Space is very powerful Use lots of white space to guide the reader’s eye and prevent them from getting sensory overload. Too many colors, too many ads, or simply too many words on your page are not good.

Subheadings Have lots of subheadings because it breaks up the text and allows the reader to scan your site and pick out the information that is relevant to their reads. When you are creating your site remember that people don’t read online, they scan. You should always make it easy for visitors to find what they need on your web page in 3o seconds or less.

Subheadings, bold, bullets, and small paragraphs are all excellent techniques to get this done.

Navigation Bars Left hand or top navigation are the easiest for web users. Almost every site on the web uses one of them or a combination of both.

If you add a right handed navigated bar, you will stand out. However, you must consider the goal of your website. Are you trying to stand out or are you trying to provide good information and get more sales?

A right handed navigation can lead to frustration so if you insist on using one, make it prominent and use it consistently on your site.

Why Venus Flytraps Make Lousy Science Fair Projects

October 27th, 2008

Every year, I receive many phone calls from parents wanting to purchase Venus Flytraps for their kids’ science project. I ask them what type of experiment that they are doing, and usually it is about what type of food source will keep the traps closed. I patiently listen to what they have to say, and then I share with them three reasons why Venus Flytraps make lousy test subjects:

1. Venus Flytraps are usually dormant when school is in session.

The school year goes from September through June. Venus Flytraps are often dormant from November through April. During dormancy, Flytraps stop growing and their traps stop working.

For any science projects to work, your young budding scientists will need to use plants that are actively growing. That means the best time to do any science project on Venus Flytraps is during June through September. Not many young budding scientists are willing to do science projects during the summer when there are many trees to climb and ponds to swim in.

2. Traps on a Venus Flytrap will open and close about half a dozen times. After that, they stop working.

Now, how many kids (and adults) out there are disciplined enough to not poke a Flytrap and to leave it alone? If a trap does not close properly, would it be because of the testing stimulus or because the trap was poked and poked and poked and poked and simply stopped working?

3. Traps will live for about 2 months, then it stops working and slowly turns black, regardless if it had been triggered or not.

Again, if a trap does not close properly, would it be because of the testing stimulus or because the trap had come to the end of its life cycle?

Select a Different Plant

For these reasons, I often persuade parents to select a different plant. The ideal plant is one that also moves, like the Venus Flytrap, but is also actively growing throughout the school year.

The plant? The Cape Sundew (Drosera capensis).

The Cape Sundew is native to South Africa and is considered a tropical plant. It does not require any dormancy and will grow beautifully throughout the year. They are also readily available by most nurseries that specializes in carnivorous plants.

Like Venus Flytraps, Cape Sundews have leaves that close around an insect. It does so very slowly, however, taking about 15 minutes to witness this amazing behavior.

Just make sure that your plant has been grown in very bright lights and has lots of dew on it. If not, your experiment may not work properly.

So, if your kids want a Venus Flytrap for a science project, use a Cape Sundew instead. But, still get them a Venus Flytrap. Growing it can be a part of their summertime activities.

The Telephone - A Brief History

October 24th, 2008

During the 1870’s, two well known inventors both independently designed devices that could transmit sound along electrical cables. Those inventors were Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray. Both devices were registered at the patent office within hours of each other. There followed a bitter legal battle over the invention of the telephone, which Bell subsequently won.

The telegraph and telephone are very similar in concept, and it was through Bell’s attempts to improve the telegraph that he found success with the telephone.

The telegraph had been a highly successful communication system for about 30 years before Bell began experimenting. The main problem with the telegraph was that it used Morse code, and was limited to sending and receiving one message at a time. Bell had a good understanding about the nature of sound and music. This enabled him to perceive the possibility of transmitting more than one message along the same wire at one time. Bell’s idea was not new, others before him had envisaged a multiple telegraph. Bell offered his own solution, the “Harmonic Telegraph”. This was based on the principal that musical notes could be sent simultaneously down the same wire, if those notes differed in pitch.

By the latter part of 1874 Bell’s experiment had progressed enough for him to inform close family members about the possibility of a multiple telegraph. Bell’s future father in law, attorney Gardiner Green Hubbard saw the opportunity to break the monopoly exerted by the Western Union Telegraph Company. He gave Bell the financial backing required for him to carry on his work developing the multiple telegraph. However Bell failed to mention that he and his accomplice, another brilliant young electrician Thomas Watson, were developing an idea which occurred to him during the summer. This idea was to create a device that could transmit the human voice electrically.

Bell and Watson continued to work on the harmonic telegraph at the insistence of Hubbard and a few other financial backers. During March 1875 Bell met with a man called Joseph Henry without the knowledge of Hubbard. Joseph Henry was the respected director of the Smithsonian Institution. He listened closely to Bell’s ideas and offered words of encouragement. Both Bell and Watson were spurred on by Henry’s opinions and continued their work with even greater enthusiasm and determination. By June 1875 they realised their goal of creating a device that could transmit speech electrically would soon be realised. Their experiments had proven different tones would vary the strength of an electric current in a wire.

Now all they had to do was build a device with a suitable membrane capable of turning those tones into varying electronic currents and a receiver to reproduce the variations and turn them back into audible format at the other end. In early June, Bell discovered that while working on his harmonic telegraph, he could hear a sound over the wire. It was the sound of a twanging clock spring. It was on March 10th 1876 that Bell was to finally realise the success and communications potential of his new device. The possibilities of being able to talk down an electrical wire far outweighed those of a modified telegraph system, which was essentially based on just dots and dashes.

According to Bell’s notebook entry for that date, he describes his most successful experiment using his new piece of equipment, the telephone. Bell spoke to his assistant Watson, who was in the next room, through the instrument and said “Mr Watson, come here, I want to speak to you”.

Alexander Graham Bell was born on 3rd March 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family were leading authorities in elocution and speech correction. He was groomed and educated to follow a career in the same speciality. By the age of just 29 in 1876 he had invented and patented the telephone. His thorough knowledge of sound and acoustics helped immensely during the development of his telephone, and gave him the edge over others working on similar projects at that time. Bell was an intellectual of quality rarely found since his death. He was a man always striving for success and searching for new ideas to nurture and develop.

The telephone - important dates

1. 1874 - Principal of the telephone was uncovered.

2. 1876 - Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone, beating Elisha Gray by a matter of hours.

3. 1877 - The very first permanent outdoor telephone wire was completed. It stretched a distance of just three miles. This was closely followed in the U.S. by the worlds first commercial telephone service.

4. 1878 - The workable exchange was developed, which enabled calls to be switched between subscribers rather than having direct lines.

5. 1879 - Subscribers began to be designated by numbers and not their names.

6. 1880’s - Long distance service expanded throughout this period using metallic circuits.

7. 1888 - Common battery system developed by Hammond V. Hayes, allows one central battery to power all telephones on an exchange, rather than relying on each units own battery.

8. 1891 - First automatic dialling system invented by a Kansas City undertaker. He believed that crooked operators were sending his potential customers elsewhere. It was his aim to get rid of the operators altogether.

9. 1900 - First coin operated telephone installed in Hartford, Connecticut.

10. 1904 - “French Phone” developed by the Bell Company. This had the transmitter and receiver in a simple handset.

11. 1911 - American Telephone and Telegraph (AT & T) acquire the Western Union Telegraph Company in a hostile takeover. They purchased stocks in the company covertly and the two eventually merged.

12. 1918 - It was estimated that approximately ten million Bell system telephones were in service throughout the U.S.

13. 1921 - The switching of large numbers of calls was made possible through the use of phantom circuits. This allowed three conversations to take place on two pairs of wires.

14. 1927 - First transatlantic service from New York to London became operational. The signal was transmitted by radio waves.

15. 1936 - Research into electronic telephone exchanges began and was eventually perfected in the 1960’s with the electronic switching system (SES).

16. 1946 - Worlds first commercial mobile phone service put into operation. It could link moving vehicles to a telephone network via radio waves.

17. 1947 - Microwave radio technology used for the first time for long distance phone calls.

18. 1947 - The transistor was invented at Bell laboratories.

19. 1955 - Saw the beginning of the laying of transatlantic telephone cables.

20. 1962 - The worlds first international communications satellite, Telstar was launched.

21. 1980’s - The development of fibre optic cables during this decade, offered the potential to carry much larger volumes of calls than satellite or microwaves.

22. 1980’s, 1990’s, to present - Huge advances in micro electronic technology over the last two decades have enabled the development of cellular (mobile) phones to advance at a truly astonishing rate. A cellular (mobile) phone has its own central transmitter allowing it to receive seamless transmissions as it enters and exits a cell.

Some people believe the impact of the telephone has had on our lives is negative. Whatever your beliefs, it is un-doubtable that the invention and development of the telephone has had a massive impact on the way we live our lives and go about our every day business.

Get Some Coaching to Get Brilliant Results

October 23rd, 2008

Coaching is a therapy that has become very familiar over the last ten years. The term lifestyle coaching first became accepted in the United States where, together with NLP aka Neuro Linguistic Programming, it became part of a redesigned superb wave of awfully proactive therapy techniques.

In many ways both Life Coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming are an answer against certain aspects of the human-centred therapy movement, in particular Human-Centred Counselling. A criticism of the humanistic approach is that it is incredibly reactive and not remarkably proactive. Although this works magnificent with some customers, with other people long periods of impasse or low return for time and effort occur. Performance coaching and NLP are both humanistic in stance, spending effort on improving a clients happiness rather than delving into the depths of childhood, as in traditional psychology. Life coachings emphasis is, however, deliberately proactive and resolve issues. Find out how to boost self esteem with a life coach.

Personal coaching is not about preaching to the customer what to do. This is a common misconception. Some therapists are pretty successful in their business careers and then make the change to performance coaching, assuming that they will merely be required to divulge their pearls of fabulous success and wisdom with the client. This is more like mentoring an apprentice in a specific environment. Lifestyle coaching is instead about life as a collective.

Power Breathing

October 20th, 2008

Power Breathing
by Alan Tutt
http://www.KeysToPower.com

How would you like a technique that will increase your mental and physical performance? With the technique I am about to share with you, you will be able to clear your mind, increase your intelligence, restore your energy, and increase your physical strength. This is also a technique that you can use any time, anywhere you happen to be, without drawing attention to yourself.

I’m talking about ‘Power Breathing’. The fundamental concept behind Power Breathing is very old, so it’s possible that you’ve seen a variation of it in other places. One thing that I’ve found is that some descriptions of the process are so vague or misleading that you end up doing it wrong and get none of the benefits that Power Breathing can give you.

In Power Breathing, you hold an image in your mind while breathing slightly different from normal. Let’s cover the mechanics of Power Breathing first, since that is the simplest component of the technique. In normal breathing, you usually use only about 1/3 of the capacity of your lungs. During exercise or other physical exertion, you will use more of your lung capacity, but you breath faster to get more oxygen to your muscles. In Power Breathing, you want to breath deeply, but slowly.

One way to control the tempo is to count. Breath in for a count of 5, then hold it for a count of 3. Breath out for a count of 7, then hold it for a count of 3. When holding, don’t close your throat as this will create unnecessary tension. Use the same muscle you use to breath in and out, but hold it in place. Just pause the in and out motion of air. Try it now and get the feeling of the tempo. Practice it several times until it feels natural and easy.

One of the easiest ways to direct Power is to imagine that it is carried by the air you breath. As you breath in, you are bringing Power into your being, and as you breath out, you are sending Power away from you. Your thoughts and feelings will condition the Power while it is inside of you.

Using this image, if you imagine that Power is energizing your body while you are breathing in, then Power is being directed to energize your body. If you imagine that Power is cleansing your mind and emotions while you are breathing out, then Power is being directed to eliminate any tensions and negativity from your mind and emotional nature. And if you combine the two images, then Power is being directed towards both goals with a phenomenal result!

There are many uses for Power Breathing, but this is perhaps the most useful. Another use for Power Breathing is for healing. If you imagine that the air you are breathing in is bringing healing energies to whatever part of you is less than perfect, then you will be directing Power to heal that part of you. Make sure that you also include the image of any negativity or infection being eliminated from your body as you are breathing out.

It is also possible to “breathe in money” and “breathe out poverty”. Or you could “breathe in love” and “breathe out loneliness”. The possibilities are endless!

“Learning From Fido” (or, the real gurrrrus online)

October 19th, 2008

If dogs were teachers we would all learn a
great deal about life, love, and work including
the internet.

I received a simple e-mail message from one
of my online friends recently that pointed out
some of the traits of dogs which are positive.
admirable, and worthy of imitation.

For example: Dogs always run to greet you
when you come home and they are happy to
see you. No questions about where you have
been or why you were late. They are just very
happy that you are home.

They are great at knowing when to take a nap
or on warm days they know when to stop and
lie back in the grass and relax.

One of our Poms that we had was good at
reminding me when it was time for a break from
the computer by jumping up on my leg for some
attention.

On hot days, they drink lots of water and find
a nice shade tree to get under.

When they are happy, they just dance around
and wag their entire bodies.

No matter how often they are scolded, they
don’t bear grudges…they just run right back
and make friends.

Most dogs will avoid biting when a simple
growl will do. ( Could this be applied to some
people’s over-reaction to spam messages ?)

Dogs like to run, romp and play daily, and yet
they can find delight in the simple joy of a long
walk with you.

They can eat with a great deal of gusto and
enthusiasm, but stop when they have had
enough.

They are loyal.

They never pretend to be something that they
are not. ( gurrrus…maybe ?)

If they want something and it lies buried, they
simply dig until they find it.

When someone is having a bad day, they can
be silent, sit close by and nuzzle gently.

Well, wouldn’t life online and off be simpler and
better for all if we adopted many of the qualities that
we find in our dogs ?

Hoping that you have a GRRREAT day !

Best of luck in your online efforts .

Stocks Falling

October 16th, 2008

Well I don’t know much about the stock market, but I do know that right now it sucks. The little amount of stocks that I have lost almost half of their value in the last week. I hope that this bailout is going to have a positive effect on our economy, and fast. I read a statistic that said something like, if you were to divvy up all the money going into the bailout, to each individual household, not each person, each household. Then each home would get something like twenty one thousand dollars. How’s that for a economic stimulus package. I guess I don’t really know how the economy works. I just figure if you gave each household that much money… it would cure a lot of problems. People could pay off there bills, make mortgage payments. That much money could change a lot of lives forever. What kind of effect would all that money given to people who really need it do for our failing economy. It could pay off every mortgage in the country under seventy five thousand dollars. That has to help right.
All I can do in times like this is stress out. I stress out about everything that has to do with money. When I stress out, I eat. I eat a lot. What I need is something to help me out in this economic disaster. Maybe I could try some of those weight loss pills like Acceletrim. Something will take my mind off the food. Something that could make me look better by burning calories and fat regardless of what I eat.
I think that if I start to focus on myself, and my body, then that would take my mind off of our failing economy. In time everything will be back to normal. Most likely we will all come back stronger that ever before. After all, our government knows whats best for all of us. Right.
